The Flight of Youth

by Richard Henry Stoddard

There are gains for all our losses.
There are balms for all our pain:
But when youth, the dream, departs
It takes something from our hearts,
And it never comes again.
We are stronger, and are better,
Under manhood's sterner reign:
Still we feel that something sweet
Followed youth, with flying feet,
And will never come again.
Something beautiful is vanished,
And we sigh for it in vain;
We behold it everywhere,
On the earth, and in the air,
But it never comes again!

我们所有的痛苦都能得到安慰;
我们变得日益刚强、更臻完美;
我们枉自为此叹息;

To Sleep

by John Keats

O soft embalmer of the still midnight,
Shutting with careful fingers and benign Our gloom-pleas'd eyes, embower'd from the light,
Enshaded in forgetfulness divine:
O soothest Sleep! if so it please thee, close
In midst of this thine hymn my willing eyes,
Or wait the amen ere thy poppy throws
Around my bed its lulling charities.
Then save me, or the passed day will shine
Upon my pillow, breeding many woes;
Save me from curious conscience, that still lords
Its strength for darkness, burrowing like a mole;
Turn the key deftly in the oiled wards,
And seal the hushed casket of my soul.

My father was my hero

My father was my hero, all throughout my life.

  The father of eight children, he saw his share of strife1.

  When I was very little, he appeared to be so large.

  In my eyes he could do anything, we all knew he was in charge2.

  He was a man of great strength both physically and in mind,

  but in him there was a gentleness, he found ways to be outgoing3 and kind.

  Many days of childhood were greeted with a kiss,

  and songs to me as I awoke, those days I surely miss.

  He made me feel so special, “Miss America” he would sing.

  I knew I had my father's love. It gave me courage to do most4 anything.

  From him I learned to stand up tall, to be proud of who I am.

  Strength and determination were the qualities of this fine man.

  As the years of his life dwindled down5, that strength kept him alive.

  Plus the unfailing determination to help my ailing6 mother have the care she needed to survive.

  He loved her and his children, so much he gave up years of his life

  caring for this woman, his soulmate, his wife.

  Day and night he struggled for years with her disease.

  A lesser man would have been brought down to his knees7.

  With illnesses of his own, he still stood by her side

  caring for her and loving her until the day she died.

  Twenty days later his own time was at an end.

  I lost my hero, my father, a man who was my friend.

  A few years have passed, and life just isn't the same.

  But as Father's Day approaches, I will celebrate8 his name.

  With prayers to him and God above to stay by my side,

  to watch over me and guide me, to look down on me with pride.

  For I am my father's daughter, one day we will meet again.

  But until then I will remember, and the love will never end.

The Pride of Youth

Proud Maisie is in the wood,
Walking so early;
Sweet Robin sits on the bush,
Singing so rarely.
“tell me ,thou bonny bird,
when shall I marry me?”
-“when six braw gentlemen
kirkward shall carry ye.”

“who makes the bridal bed,
birdie, say truly?”
-“The gray-headed sexton
That delves the grave duly.

“The glowworm o’er grave and stone
Shall light thee steady;
The owl from the steeple sing,
Welcome, proud lady.”

踩着晨曦;

Dreams 梦想

---Langston Hughes

Hold fast to dreams

For if dreams die

Life is a broken-winged bird

That can never fly.

Hold fast to dreams

For when dreams go 梦想若是消丧

Life is a barren field

Frozen only with snow

What makes a man?
---Hamlin Garland

Do you fear the force of the wind

The slash of the rain?

Go face them and fight them, 去迎着风雨努力拼搏

Be savage again .

Go hungry and cold like the wolf

Go wade like the crane.

The palms of your hands will thicken,

The skin of your cheeks will tan

You’ll grow ragged and weary and swarthy,

But you will walk like a man!

"Thinking of You"

When will the moon be clear and bright?
With a cup of wine in my hand, I ask the blue sky.
I don't know what season it would be in the heavens on this night.
I'd like to ride the wind to fly home.
Yet I fear the crystal and jade mansions are much too high and cold for me.
Dancing with my moon-lit shadow
It does not seem like the human world
The moon rounds the red mansion Stoops to silk-pad doors
Shines upon the sleepless Bearing no grudge
Why does the moon tend to be full when people are apart?
People may have sorrow or joy, be near or far apart
The moon may be dim or bright, wax or wane
This has been going on since the beginning of time
May we all be blessed with longevity Though far apart, we are still able to share the beauty of the moon together.

- Poem written during the night of the Mid-Autumn Festival of
1076 by Su Tung Po (Translated by Shun-Yi Lee in 1998)

You Are Worth it(值得)

Do not undermine(贬低) your worth by comparing yourself with others.
It is because we are different that each of us is special.

Do not set your goals by what other people deem(认为)important.
Only you know what is best for you.

Do not take for granted the things closest to your heart.
Cling to(依附) them as you would enjoy your life, for without them, life is meaningless.

Do not let your life slip through your fingers by living in the past nor for the future.
By living your life one day at a time, you live all the days of your life.

Do not give up when you still have something to give.
Nothing is really over until the moment you stop trying.
It is a fragile(软弱) thread that binds(约束) us to each other.

Do not be afraid to encounter (碰到)risks.
It is by taking chances that we learn how to be brave.

Do not shut love out of your life by saying it is impossible to find.
The quickest way to receive love is to give love;
The fastest way to lose love is to hold it too tightly.

Do not dismiss your dreams.
To be without dreams is to be without hope;
To be without hope is to be without purpose.

Do not run through life so fast that you forget not only where you have been, but also where you are going.

Life is not a race, but a journey to be savored(品味) each step of the way.

Mao wrote some poems, two poems actually, about getting rid of a disease that was a plague for the country. And it's called "Saying goodbye to the God of Disease." And the poem needs annotation. In that sense, it"s typical of classical Chinese poetry; he makes references to earlier emperors and places.

Saying Goodbye to the God of Disease

Mauve waters and green mountains are nothing

When the great ancient doctor Hua Tuo

Could not defeat a tiny worm.

A thousand villages collapsed, were choked with weeds,

Men were lost arrows, ghosts sang

In the doorway of a few desolate houses.

Yet now in a day, we leap around the earth,

Or explore a thousand milky ways.

And if the cowherd who lives on a star

Asks about the God of plagues,

Tell him,, happy or sad, "The God is gone,

Washed away in the waters."

A poem by Mao Tsetong read by Willis Barnstone, Professor of Comparative Literature at Indiana University in Bloomington. He talked with us from WFIU.

Childrens Eyes

What kind of world is it my friend
that little children see?
I wonder if they see God first
because they just believe?

Do they see strength in caring eyes
who watch them as they play -
or maybe love through gentle hands
that guide them on their way?

Do you think they dream of future times
when they would be a king -
or just enjoy their present life
while with their friends they sing?

Do they see the acts of kindness
done for people who are poor?
Is the very best in everyone
what they are looking for?

And when the day is over,
as they close their eyes to sleep,
do they look forward to tomorrow
with its promises to keep?

If this is what the children see,
then it should be no surprise,
the world would be a better place
if we all had children's eyes.

If 如果

If you can keep your head when all about you
Are losing theirs and blaming it on you;
If you can trust yourself when all men doubt you,
But make allowance for their doubting too;
If you can wait and not be tired by waiting,
Or, being lied about,don't deal in lies,
Or, being hated, don't give way to hating,
And yet don't look too good, nor talk too wise;

If you can dream - and not make dreams your master;
If you can think - and not make thoughts your aim;
If you can meet with triumph and disaster
And treat those two impostors just the same;
If you can bear to hear the truth you've spoken
Twiseted by knaves to make a trap for fools,
Or watch the things you gave your life to broken,
And stoop and build 'em up with wornout tools;

If you can make one heap of all your winnings
And risk it on one turn of pitch-and-toss,
And lose, and start again at your beginnings
And never breathe a word about your loss;
If you can force your heart and nerve and sinew
To serve your turn long after they are gone,
And so hold on when there is nothin in you
Except the Will which says to them:"Hold on!";

If you can talk with crowds and keep your virtue,
Or walk with Kings -nor lose the common touch;
If neither foes nor loving friends can hurt you;
If all men count with you, but none too much;
If you can fill the unforgiving minute
With sixty second' worth of distance run -
Yours is the Earth and everything that's in it,
And - which is more - you'll be a Man my son!

    你仍能保持头脑情形;
    你仍能坚信自己,让所有的怀疑动摇;
    为人所骗,不要因此骗人,
    为人所恨,不要因此抱恨,
    不要太乐观,不要自以为是;

如果你是个追梦人——不要被梦主宰;
如果你是个爱思考的人——光想会达不到目标;
     把两者当骗子看待;
    被恶棍扭曲,用于蒙骗傻子;
    看着你用毕生去看护的东西被破坏,
    然后俯身,用破烂的工具把它修补;

    突遇颠峰下跌之险,
    失败过后,东山再起,
    不要抱怨你的失败;
    在别人走后,长久坚守阵地,
    在你心中已空荡荡无一物’
    只有意志告诉你“坚持!”;

    伴王行走,能保持距离;
如果仇敌和好友都不害你;
如果所有人都指望你,却无人全心全意;

Windflowers

Windflowers,windflowers
  my father told me not to go
  near them
  He said he feared them always
  and he told me that they
  carried him away

Windflowers,beartiful
   windflowers
   I couldn't wait to touch them
   to smell them I held them
   closely
   And now I cannot break away
   Their sweet bouquet disappears
   like the vapor in the desert
   So take a warning ,son

Windflowers ,ancient
  windflowers
  their beauty capture every
  young dreamer
  who lingers near them
  But ancient windflowers,
  I love you
