在这一课里，我们要讲几个和吃东西有关的词汇。第一个是: doggy bag。
Doggy这是字是dog,也就是“狗”这个字的形容词。Bag大家都知道是“口袋”的意思。Doggy bag连在一起是指饭馆里把客人吃剩的菜放在盒子里，然后把它们都放在一个纸口袋里让客人带回家的那种口袋。那末，这和狗又有什么关系呢? Doggy bag这个说法的出现有它特殊的背景。以前美国人也不好意思把在饭馆吃剩的菜带回家，怕有失面子。所以有的人就会对服务员说：

每一种语言都有它独特的成语和俗语。而学习外语的人经常在理解这些习惯用语时会感到很困难。这是因为你不可能从组成某个习惯用语的字面上来懂得它的意思。
比如,美国人经常说:"Give me a hand." 按照字面来理解, "give me hand"就是"给我一只手。"可是,它的意思却是"帮我一下忙。"
另外一个例子是: "Foot the bill."
"Foot"的意思是 "一只脚",而"bill"在这儿的解释是"账单"。"Foot the bill."并不是把帐单踩在脚底下,而是付账的意思。
另外,有的时候,一个词汇有好几种解释。就拿下面一句话来作例子吧:
例句-1:"We arrived two hours late at the big blow-out（聚会） for Charlie's birthday because our car had a blow-out（轮胎炸裂）."

Lock, stock and barrel和Hook, line and sinker都是全部的意思,可是用法却不同。

A DOG IN THE MANGER
因为文化传统的关系，狗在英语语言中都被当作忠实、可爱、聪敏的象征，因此与之有关的短语也大多为褒义之词，但 a dog in the manger 则属例外。从字面来看，A dog in the manger 是指『马厩里的狗』，大家可能觉得奇怪了，狗怎么跑到马厩里去了呢？要解释清楚这个短语的实际含义，还得追根溯源。

身体不舒服或者心情不好，英文口语叫做out of sorts。这个sort字一般解作“种类”，和身体、心情等有甚么关系呢?这有两个说法。
一个说法是从前活体印刷用的铅字叫sort；排字工人假如发觉铅字不够用，自然会觉得麻烦、不高兴。Out of sorts(缺乏铅字)之所以解作“心情不好”，又引伸解作“身体不舒服”，就是这个缘故。

什么叫做“中间的猪”呢?原来这是从前英国小孩子爱玩的一个游戏。游戏由三人共玩:两人分别站在两边，把球投给对方；另一人站在中间，做“中间的猪”，设法把球抢到手。做“中间的猪”当然最不好玩，因为投球双方都会千方百计让他呆站着，抢不到球。所以，人们现在就用pig in the middle来说站在争执双方之间完全无能为力的人
